What Constitutes Ragging?
As defined under UGC Regulations 2009 and West Bengal Government guidelines
Definition: Ragging constitutes one or more of any of the following acts: any conduct by any student or students whether by words spoken or written or by an act which has the effect of teasing, treating or handling with rudeness any other student; indulging in rowdy or undisciplined activities by any student which causes or is likely to cause annoyance, hardship, physical or psychological harm or to raise fear or apprehension in any fresh or junior student.
Types of Ragging
- Physical ragging — any act of physical assault, forcing physical activity
- Mental ragging — humiliation, ridicule, abuse, intimidation, threat
- Sexual ragging — any act of sexual nature, inappropriate conduct
- Financial ragging — extortion of money or services
- Online/cyber ragging — harassment through digital platforms
Consequences
- Cancellation of admission and debarment from future admissions
- Suspension or expulsion from the institution
- Withholding of scholarship, fellowship, or other benefits
- Registration of FIR with the police as per applicable IPC sections
- Collective punishment of hostel/class if group involvement is established

Preventive, systemic and monitoring measures in place
Online Undertaking
Every student and parent must submit an anti-ragging undertaking on antiragging.in at the time of admission. Physical copy also submitted to the college office.
CCTV Surveillance
24×7 CCTV coverage in hostel corridors, campus entry/exit points, common areas, and canteen. Footage reviewed by the monitoring committee.
Night Patrols
Security personnel conduct regular night patrols of hostel blocks and campus premises to deter incidents.
Proctorial System
Faculty proctors are assigned to each batch to monitor student welfare, maintain contact, and report concerns early.
Awareness Programmes
Orientation sessions for new batches on anti-ragging policy, helpline numbers, and complaint procedures held at the start of every academic year.
Online Registration
Registration on the national anti-ragging portal (antiragging.in) is mandatory for all students; compliance is verified by the committee.
