The West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS) was established in 2003 under the West Bengal University of Health Sciences Act, 2003. Headquartered in New Town, Kolkata, the university is the sole affiliating body for all medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy, and allied health science colleges in the state of West Bengal. It functions under the aegis of the Government of West Bengal, Department of Health & Family Welfare.
WBUHS oversees the conduct of examinations, prescription of syllabi, grant of affiliation, and the general academic governance of all health science institutions in the state. The university ensures that the academic programmes offered by affiliated colleges are in conformity with the standards prescribed by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI), the Indian Nursing Council (INC), and other statutory bodies.
Rampurhat Government Medical College & Hospital has been affiliated to WBUHS since 2018, the year of its establishment. The affiliation is renewed annually following a formal inspection process conducted by the university on behalf of the NMC and other regulators.

Affiliated Programmes
- MBBS — 150 seats per year (UG Medical)
- B.Sc Nursing — sanctioned intake as per INC norms
- Paramedical Diploma programmes (Medical Lab Technology, Radiography, OT Technician, etc.)
- PG programmes (MD/MS) — under application to NMC/WBUHS
Annual Renewal Process
Affiliation renewal for each academic year is conducted through the following process:
- Institution submits renewal application to WBUHS before the prescribed deadline
- WBUHS constitutes an inspection committee (including NMC nominees for MBBS)
- Physical inspection of infrastructure, clinical material, faculty, and records
- Deficiency report issued if requirements are not met; compliance report to be submitted
- Affiliation order issued for the academic year upon satisfactory compliance
WBUHS inspection schedule: typically February – April each year.
